Read beyond the journal
Keep a reading book alongside the course. Choose with your tutor so the language stretches you while leaving room to enjoy the story. Mix independent reading with reading aloud together.
Two older poems to share
Unit 8 introduces short extracts from these works. Read the complete poems together, explain unfamiliar words and compare their speakers, images and settings with the original Riverside poems.
- William Wordsworth — “I wandered lonely as a cloud”
Written in 1804. Find the poem in this public-domain collection. Notice the cloud comparison and how remembering a scene changes the speaker’s response. Vales means valleys.
- Rabindranath Tagore — “Paper Boats”, in The Crescent Moon (1913)
Read the child speaker’s imagined journeys. Compare the movement of the boats with the outdoor images in the Riverside poems. Use the collection’s contents to find Paper Boats.
The linked editions are hosted by Project Gutenberg. The rest of the Riverside lesson and assessment passages are original Find Tutor writing. A single poem does not represent every person or experience in its culture.
A reading routine
- Read an enjoyable stretch of a chosen book or poem. Take turns if decoding is demanding.
- Choose a short passage to reread smoothly. Explain one unfamiliar word using its context.
- Discuss an idea, feeling or question and point to a detail that prompted it.
- Record the title, author, a useful word and a brief personal response in a reading journal.
- Recommend or decline the book with a specific reason. Respect a partner’s different preference.
For tutors
Include historical fiction, fantasy, stories with dilemmas, poems, plays and non-fiction across the learner’s wider reading. Use school or library catalogues to practise locating fiction and non-fiction. Record independence and support alongside comprehension.
